A hive tool is an essential piece of equipment for beekeepers.
It is a handheld tool that is used to help beekeepers manipulate the frames and other components of the hive during inspections, maintenance, and honey extraction.
Hive tools come in a variety of shapes and sizes, but most consist of a long, narrow metal blade with a hooked end.
The hooked end is used to pry apart frames and boxes, while the blade can be used to scrape away propolis, wax, and other debris.
Some hive tools also have a flat end that can be used to hammer in nails or to scrape away excess wax or propolis.
Others have a curved or angled end that can be used to lift frames or remove burr comb.
When choosing a hive tool, it’s important to consider factors such as the type of hive being used, the size of the frames, and personal preference.
Some beekeepers prefer longer or heavier tools for increased leverage, while others prefer shorter or lighter tools for ease of use.
It’s also important to choose a tool that is made of high-quality materials and is durable enough to withstand frequent use.
Types of hive tool
There are a few types of hive tools on the market here you can read about the differences between them.
Standard Hive tool

For me, the standard hive tool is the best choice because it gives you nice leverage while making space between frames.
It is wide enough so you don’t put pressure on a small surface to damage a frame.
The wide side is wide enough to clean the roofs from the inside or big flat surfaces faster.
If there is not enough space to maneuver there is the narrow part of the tool that can help you.
All in all super helpful and wide range of uses.
J hook hive tool

It has the same purpose as the standard hive tool.
The hook part is intended for easier frame dislodging with minimal damage to the coomb but with a pressure point that narrow it is easier to damage the wood.
The wide part is not as wide as the standard hive tool so scrapping bigger areas is gonna go slower.
Overall it is a good tool but the standard hive tool has a more diverse use.
Frame grip

A frame grip tool is used to get a better grip on a frame usually it is used on beehives that have more aggressive colonies.
With this tool, you will need a standard or j hook tool to dislodge the frames before pulling them with the frame grip.
For me, this tool is useless while beekeeping.
It is easier to pick up the frame with your hands and do an inspection because you can handle the frame as you want and with the grip, you can just hold it by it.
